Resumo
Contradicting Maur Cochéril’s (1914–1982) opinion, there is a Portuguese manuscript of the Latin Ars Minor by Ælius Donatus (fl. mid-4th century). Hitherto unknown to international research on Donatus' grammar, the manuscript can be found in the third part of the Vocabularium Latinum or Elementarium Doctrinæ Rudimentum by Papias Vocabulista (fl. 1050), between folios 252v and 258r of the Codex Alc. 426. Belonging to the Portuguese National Library in Lisbon, it might have been written in the 13th century in the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça, subordinated to the Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça. The manuscript was copied in a protogottica letter by the same hand as the other main works of the codex. The grammar's text is very similar to the one established by the critical editions by Keil & Mommsen (1864) and mainly by Louis Holtz (1981), who did not consider the Alcobaçan codex. It should be pointed out that the Alcobaçan manuscript offers meaningful innovations, which allowed to compare it with some manuscripts spread over several European countries, trying to see how the Alcobaçan culture is linked to them. Thus, in this paper, I present a semi-diplomatic edition, with the application of rigorous criteria for paleographic transcription.
