Astrotourism is a recent phenomenon, corresponding to the growing practice of innovative, integrated and attractive tourism activities, centred on the observation of the night skies and celestial phenomena, especially in natural spaces, contributing to the involvement, strengthening and participation of local communities and the development of low-density territories. The main objective of this research is to understand what the expectations of local stakeholders and potential tourists are regarding an astrotourism offer in the region, based on the certification of the Tua Valley Regional and Natural Park (TVRNP) as a Starlight Tourist Destination (STD), contributing to evaluate the potential of astrotourism in the sustainable development of the Tua Valley. In this context, in a more detailed way, the following specific objectives are highlighted: (a) outline the general framework of astrotourism, analysing the scientific contributions in the area and the evolution of the topic over time; (b) assess the interest of different regional stakeholders in an astrotourism offer in the Tua Valley, to boost the tourism offer through activities related to celestial observation and contribute to local socio-economic development; (c) to listen to different local stakeholders about the territorial visions about the creation of a collaborative network in Vale do Tua, in the scope of astrotourism, that serves, simultaneously, the needs of the region and the expectations of its actors, contributing, also, to the local development at several levels; (d) to understand how potential visitors value the main components of the astrotourism experience and how these components can influence the intention to visit an astrotourism destination such as the TVRNP. This Thesis is composed of four empirical studies: (i) the first corresponds to a systematic literature review on the theme of astrotourism, with reference to publications in the Scopus and Web of Science databases; (ii) the second was based on the worldwide trajectory of the various STDs to assess the interest of regional stakeholders in an astrotourism offer in the TVRNP; (iii) the third one sought to understand the different territorial visions about the proposal of creating a collaborative network in the Tua Valley, linked to astrotourism, based on the network theory and the helix models (triple, quadruple and quintuple); (iv) the fourth and last study used an international sample of tourists to evaluate the potential of the astrotourism offer in the Tua Valley, through the study of the destination image and intention of future visit. The results of the different studies show that, despite the concept of astrotourism being somewhat consensual, along with movements for the defence and protection of the sky, the emergence of certified sites and the growing interest in this theme have led to a greater demand for astrotourism activities and an increase in scientific research in this field. At the regional level, the interviewed stakeholders showed interest in the certification project of the TVRNT as a STD, supporting astrotourism as a tool for sustainable and socioeconomic development. In the context of the opportunity to create a collaborative network in the Tua Valley, within the scope of astrotourism, another sample of stakeholders proved attracted by the proposal to create a new model with a view to the sustainable development of this region. The study of potential tourists revealed that, apart from a basic experience of darkness and silence, the components of the astrotourism experience most valued by tourists are the cultural and expertise elements, as they enrich and complement the observation. This framework allows us to suggest that the evolutionary potential of astrotourism as a research theme, tourist offer and driving agent of sustainable, socio-economic, cultural and scientific development, will contribute to the progress and growth of the Tua Valley. However, for the TVRNP astrotourism project to achieve the desired success, it is necessary to create a network where its actors collaborate mutually. This research aims to contribute theoretically and empirically to the consolidation of the concept of astrotourism and the recognition of its contribution to sustainable regional development, from a perspective linked to the territory and local agents, without forgetting the international outlook and tourists' perspective on the subject. It is also hoped that this Thesis will contribute in a practical and innovative way to the transformation of the territory of the Tua Valley, by proposing the creation of a regional network comprising visitors, community and supply, helping to organise regional tourism and resource management, encouraging new forms of governance that reinforce the competitiveness of destinations.
