Animal welfare is a concurrent topic across all fields of Animal Science and has undergone intense evolution within recent years as a result of scientific and technological advances. This is a complex subject which can have different interpretations under varied entities. One of its biggest challenges is researching proper indicators that can adequately assess welfare, particularly those that are based on the animal, which can allow for a practical, fast, and low-cost assessment when integrated into welfare protocols, by relying on a wide range of parameters. Protocols are important tools for animal welfare assessment that help workers by improving the quality of life of livestock and informs the consumer when welfare standards are being met. Infrared technology has been sophisticated into useful and practical equipment which are used in many different sciences fields. However, infrared thermography (IRT) does present some appealing advantages as an easy-to-use tool that records and measures surface temperature at a distance. The eyes are one of the most common sites used to measure infrared temperature, since it is not coated with hair and can be used as a reference point for image acquisition. Furthermore, research has been made that link stress and core body temperature with changes in eye IRT. Thus, the present work aims to verify the usefulness of eye IRT in cattle during stressful events. To this effect, 42 animals of the Arouquesa cattle breed were used to collect thermographic images (FLIR E8) and to register rectal temperature when subjected to different conditions: one group which was only weighed and another which was subject to handling and prophylactic procedures. IRT values did not significantly correlate with rectal temperature, however, maximum eye temperature proved to be accurate in detecting surface temperature changes, with initial mean values of 33.5ºC and 32.5ºC, and of 35.8ºC and 34.1ºC during the procedures, for the weighing group and the prophylactic group respectively. This increase of 2.3ºC and 1.6ºC in temperature shows that IRT can potentially be used as an instrument to detect changes in ocular temperature for different situations, and it is advised that external factors, such as environmental effects, are adequately supervised.
