This study aims at assessing the “Levante” wind conditions along the southern coast of the Algarve by analysing its features and origin. As such, the following va-riables (September 2002 to March 2009) provided by the “Instituto de Meteorologia”, I. P., and recorded at the weather stations of Faro and Sagres, were used: wind and air/sea surface temperatures. Throughout the current study a number of graphs and tables were produced for the selected period, yielding two main outcomes: First, the “Levante” is mainly an easterly wind, with some south-easterly and few southerly occurrences; sec-ond, based on the selected weather stations, there is an absence of “Levante” in January (July) in Faro (Sagres). The “Levante” is called a land wind, blowing against the waves; when strong enough it does in fact smooth the sea surface, also enhancing coastal erosion, as sand is transported in the opposite direction of the wind. The persistence of such weather conditions during several consecutive days leads to a smooth sea with a significant lack of fish. The south-easterly wind is warm and can trigger thunderstorms and windstorms over the sea, also roughing the sea along the southern coast of the Algarve. Despite the fish abundance, rough sea conditions usually hinder fishery. The “Levante” wind, through its mechanical action, is also very feared by farmers, mainly due to the large number of salt particles carried by it, often leading to losses in early cultivars and fruit trees, particularly in the case of almond trees. In March, it can also cause important losses in the orange trees. The easterly and south-easterly winds also tend to increase sea temperatures, which in the summer is a clear advantage for tourists. It is thus important to understand the characteristics of this wind for the development of the agriculture, tourism and fishery industries, as well as for the study of the regional coastal areas.
