The objective is to analyze the histological bone response to a new synthetic nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHA). Six New Zealand White rabbits were divided into two groups. Bilateral cranial defects were prepared. At each group, five defects were filled with nHA and one was left empty (neg- ative control). Rabbits were euthanized after two (group 1) and four weeks (group 2). Histological samples were pro- cessed by using an undecalcified technique. A qualitative histological analysis was performed. At two weeks period, the hydroxyapatite group had new bone formation near the lateral margins and also new trabeculae bridging and surrounding hydroxyapatite particles. It was observed new lamellar bone. At four weeks period, the hydrox- yapatite group showed thick bone trabeculae incorporating some hydroxyapatite particles. Some hydroxyapatite particleswere in contact with woven bone but a new bone with lamel- lar architecture was also observed. Some nHA particles were under an apparent demineralization process. During the 4 weeks experimental period, the control group had sparse bone formation near the defect margins. This animal model was appropriated to the purpose of this study. We could see both new immature and mature bone tissue surrounding the nHA particles, mainly at the four weeks period.
