This paper - José do Telhado and Antonio Silvino: the ambivalent hero construction - presents, as the research’s purpose, the analysis of popular heroes, represented by the historical figures of the Portuguese robber José do Telhado (1818-1875) and the Brazilian “cangaceiro” Antonio Silvino (1875- 1944). It compares the literary texts that thematize their lives and war deeds, mentioned directly or indirectly, such as “folhetos de cordel”, novels, chronicles and memoirs. Verified the indisputable permanence of the theme of the hero-villain in the popular imagination as the one who applies the justice to their people, under the shadow of the English legend of Robin Hood, this paper seeks to ascertain how literary discourse reinforces and feeds the construction and dissemination of such characters. The work is still interested in bringing out the definitions of hero discussed in literary theory, in order to check the (dis)adjustment of such meanings of characters classified as folk heroes, unveiling any possible ambiguities and inaccuracies. Despite the criticism has recommended the "demolition of the hero", the heroic fantasy appears to remain active and constant, and plays an essential role in Portuguese and Brazilian cultural manifestations. We deduce from this approach that the literary theme of the legendary hero fascinates and condenses images of symbolic value to a community, and expresses dynamically the mentality in which it recognizes. This thesis includes two basic parts: theoretical and practical. In the first part, in addition to theoretical review on the concepts of character, hero and anti-hero, the hero-bandit archetype represented by Robin Hood is also investigated. In the second part, more extensive, various texts, in prose and verse, thematizing the heroes José do Telhado and Antonio Silvino, are analyzed, with the purpose of checking out how the literary speech and the narrative resources employed by the authors have contributed to the construction of an ambivalent hero profile. This analysis aims to unveil the real and fictional links established in several receptions of José do Telhado and Antonio Silvino, as well as to bring to the discussion the important contribution of the literary text not only in the imaginary registration, but also, and above all, in the maintenance of this imaginary as an incitement to the creative genius of popular culture.
