Most of the strategies to minimize the impacts of slurry application to the soil are based on the reduction of N losses by volatilization. These are based on changes of physical and chemical properties of the materials as the change in their pH, physical separation of materials or techniques related to the application of these materials in the soil. However, these strategies have been developed without taking into account possible effects in processes such as mineralization or leaching of N. Thus, this work aims to assess the effect of the techniques used to reduce N lost by volatilization in other processes as mineralization and leaching of pig manure N applied to the soil. For this purpose, it was installed an incubation assay in field conditions, based on open reactors with ion exchange resins instaled in the lower top, relative to 5 treatments with application of a pig slurry content equivalent to 80 kg N per hectare in the form of: (i) Raw Effluent non-acidified applied at surface (BS) (T1); (ii) Raw Effluent acidified applied at surface (BAS) (T2); Raw Effluent injected (BE) (T3); (iv) liquid fraction non-acidified applied at surface (FLS) (T4) and (v) liquid fraction acidified applied at surface (FLAS) (T5). A sixth treatment, without organic matter application, was also considered serving as control (T6At each sampling date, the reactors were destroyed proceeding to the evaluation of the N mineral content in the soil and in the ion exchange resins utilizing an extractive solution of KCl 1M. The leaching potential was determined based on the difference between the amount of N adsorbed by the resins in the treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4 e T5) and in the control (T6). In turn, the mineralization was determined based on the sum of the accumulated N leachate and the variation of mineral nitrogen in the soil among the treatments for each period. Both processes were expressed in terms of mg N g-1 N added. The results revealed amounts of N mineralized and leached most significant (p <0.05) in acidified materials and in injected application. The effect of acidification was higher in the raw effluent than in the liquid fraction, increasing the amounts of N mineralized and N leached in a factor of 7.4 to 7.2, between the BAS and BS, and 2.8 to 1.8 between FLAS and FLS, respectively. In turn, the observed increases of BE compared to BS were in the range of 4.4 for N mineralized and 3.2 for N leached. Concerning the physical separation, the liquid effluent promoted simultaneously higher mineralization and N leaching comparatively to the raw effluent, with higher results registered in the acidic fractions with 406.6 and 430.9 mg N g-1 added N in FLAS and 356.2 and 397.1 mg N g-1 N added in BAS, respectively. The differences in results are explained by the greater chemical quality and lower gas losses by volatilization promoted by acidification. The lowers gas losses also explain the differences between the studied effluent fractions, FLS and BS, which were minimized by the acidification effect. The results show that the strategies used in the reduction of gas losses allow increases in mineralized amounts and respective availability of mineral nitrogen from the soil to the plants but also for the potential leaching. Therefore, it is important that the application timing of this kind of organic waste are based on in-situ mineralization studies in order to improve the synchronization between N availability and the phases of plants greater needs with a goal of increase the efficiency of nutrients in organic form.
