Virtual worlds, particularly those that provide a three-dimensional physical space (3DVW), have features that make them suitable to support collaborative activities. These features distinguish 3DVW from other collaboration tools, and should be taken into consideration by the scientific field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). CSCW has long been studying collaboration supported by computers, and created several taxonomies to classify systems that support collaboration. There are several taxonomies of the CSCW field, and so here they are analyzed and synthesized into a comprehensive taxonomy, representative of the others, by including the most relevant dimensions of each taxonomy. With this taxonomy this thesis classified 3DVW in the scope of CSCW. It was concluded with this classification of 3DVW withing the taxonomies of CSCW, that current taxonomies do not include several distinctive features of 3DVW. It was also concluded that these features are strongly related with the theory of Presence, contributing to its perception. Presence promotes the engagement of users, and helps them participate in activities, better understand their surroundings, and interact with the world. Given the importance of nonverbal communication in 3DVW for collaboration, it was intended to know how its characteristics, such as the use of an avatar, gestures, sounds, etc., influence the collaboration in order to be able to explicit them in a taxonomy. Thus, several cases of collaboration are analyzed with this objective. These studies demonstrate those relationships, allowing one to know the impact in collaborative situations of each specific characteristic of 3DVW. The use of an avatar, of gestures and expressions, the existence of a three-dimensional space, and the themed environment, influence the collaboration, enhancing communication, contributing to the group's awareness (in the scope of CSCW), and promoting the sharing of artifacts, the socialization of users, and team building. These distinctive features of 3DVW match those considered most important for creating the feeling of Presence. It is proposed that Presence be added to a even more comprehensive taxonomy as a new dimension. This new dimension is proposed as "presence", subdivided into "avatar" and "physical space". In turn, these are divided into, respectively: "physical appearance", "gestures, sounds and animations" and "focus, nimbus and aura"; "environment" and "objects / artefacts". This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of CSCW and groupware taxonomies, and proposes a comprehensive taxonomy, representative of the main dimensions of the various taxonomies analyzed. It also provides a thorough understanding of the importance of Presence for collaboration, as well as the relationship between Presence and 3DVW. It also provides a case study protocol for 3DVW, which can be used further in future situations, and also with an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the distinctive features of 3DVW and collaboration. Finally, this thesis provides a taxonomy proposal with an extension that includes these features.
