The Iberian lynx is a medium-sized feline, the largest wild cat in Europe and endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Its current conservation status, according to IUCN, is endangered. Due to the lack of individuals in the wild, several conservation programs have emerged to stop the extinction of the Iberian lynx. The Iberian Lynx ex-situ Conservation Program is in progresso and the present work data was collected from animals included in this program. The main objective of this work is the characterization of the diet at the National Reproduction Centre of the Iberian Lynx (CNRLI) in Silves, Portugal. The first study involves the characterization of the diet items and its nutritional content. The second study aims the in vivo measure of the apparent digestibility of rabbit carcass and whole rabbit in the Iberian lynx. This are the two main diet items of this species in the Centre (both items) and in the wild (whole rabbit). The first study shows that, for energy intake, the unit of metabolic weight differed with gender (W, W0,67, W0,75, P<0.05), with females having the highest values. The second study shows significant differences between the chemical composition of the rabbit carcass and the whole rabbit DM (29,2 vs. 24,5), OM (87,3 vs. 88,4); CP (68,2 vs. 60,4), NDF (10,5 vs. 16,7), ADF (0,6 vs. 8,2), ADL (0,9 vs. 5,8),( P<0,05), except for crude fat (P>0,05). The digestibility of the DM, OM, CP, CF and NDF of the whole rabbit is higher (P<0,05) when compared to the rabbit carcass. The digestibility of this fractions between genders is the same (P>0,05) except for the NDF digestibility (P<0,05), where the females show higher values. Although the carcass possesses higher concentrations of nutrients and energy and has higher digestibility of nutrients, it is unclear the effect of the essentials non-nutrients provide by whole rabbit for the Iberian lynx.
