Mathematical objects are materialized through multiple representations in middle school Mathematics classes. Literature corroborate a predominance of symbolic and verbal representations and reveals the lack of teaching experience of representations transformation. This is this thesis’ investigation problem. Visual representation allows a global and creative exploration of mathematical objects, reason why the conviction of its importance in the transformation of representations, helping in the comprehension of Mathematics. Then, we had as general objective to explore ways to increase the impact of the usage of visual representations as an epistemic tool and focused in the impact that this practice has in the continuity of the students’ mathematics activity, and in the role that they had in the construction of its knowledge. This study follows the Design Science methodology approach allowing to: (a) identify and develop a solution through the usage of visual representations empowering the dilution of the inherent difficulties to using multiple representations; (b) to enlarge the knowledge of visual representations as an artefact in the solution of mathematical tasks. This study allowed answers to four research questions based on the three stages that were developed. Participants in Stage 1 were a group of students (11,3-year-old average) and their Mathematics teacher, the same throughout the whole study. This stage’s objective was to recognize visual representations as a valid artefact in teaching and learning, and intended to answer to the following research questions: RQ1: Which characteristics must visual representations have to give continuity to the students’ activity? RQ2: What is the impact of visual treatments of a certain representation form in the students’ activity during the resolution of a mathematical task? Stage 1 results showed that visual representations used with visual treatments are an artefact to which teachers and students can resort to during a task’s resolutions, but such usage is not clear for students. Stage 2 had as objective the improvement of the theoretical and practical knowledge of the research teacher, and intended to answer to the third research question: RQ3: Which actions should the teacher adopt to improve his teaching practice using visual representations as an artefact? Stage 2 results showed the necessity of both intentional and systematic professional development, to make feasible a justified selection and exploration of tasks related to representations transformations and to get the students familiar with representations transformations, particularly visual treatments. This stage students were a school class (10,7- year-old) and the teacher that followed them throughout middle school. Stage 3 (same participants of Stage 2 in the following year) has as objective to prove that visual representations can act as an epistemic mathematical tool, allowing the answer of the fourth question: RQ4: How can the teacher to persuade students to use the artefact “visual representations” as a tool? How can students use visual representations as an epistemic tool in Mathematics learning? Stage 3 results showed that students produced new knowledge using the artefact “visual representations” as an epistemic mathematical tool through the realization of visual treatments. The obtained results to the research questions allow us to identify the contribution of our study: − The realization of visual treatments allows the manipulation of any kind of representations, it facilitates the continuity of the students’ activity e empowers the transformation of representations, diversifying them, by varying the teaching strategies and/or resolution of a task. − The knowledge and the abilities to select, create and use visual treatments of the teacher result from his professional, intentional and systematic development, and play an important role in students’ learning skills. − Visual treatments are a mathematical tool that can provide an epistemic meditation allowing students to learn in different levels of sophistication, and according to “their” paths in the resolution of the task We conclude that visual representations are an artefact available to teachers and students allowing, in certain usage conditions, to transform them in epistemic mathematical tools, through visual treatments. When this happens, they allow: (i) the continuity of the students’ activity; (ii) transformation of representations, improving learning skills; (iii) a work in various sophistication levels dependent on the student’s mathematical culture, improving communication; (iv) other possibilities of watching and understanding tools. Nevertheless, the exploration of visual representations is not innate, nor obvious to teachers and students, having this ability of being learnt and developed.
