The use of the Internet mainly by young people has been considered a topic of growing concern on the part of researchers in the area, in order to ascertain the prevalence of its additive use, as well as the possible association with individual differences. In this way, the present study can contribute to the deepening of the understanding of the relation between the Internet use and the personality characteristics contemplated in the five factors model. It was also intended to analyze the relationship between sociodemographic variables, namely, gender, age and addition to the internet, in students of higher education. A sample of 1050 individuals between the ages of 17 and 35 was used for this purpose, 633 of the female gender and 417 of the male gender, to which a questionnaire was applied composed of sociodemographic questions (e. g., gender, age, among others) ), the Internet Addition Test (IAT), and the Inventory of Personality - Five-Factor NEO Inventory (NEO-FFI). The results indicated that the addition to the internet depends on the personality factors, and it has been observed that more neurotic, more extroverted, less agreeable and less conscientious individuals revealed a higher degree of internet addition. It was also observed that gender had a statistically significant effect in internet addition, presenting men as tendentially more addicted to the internet than the female subjects. Regarding age, the results indicated higher values in the IAT among younger individuals. The present study proved to be important in that the knowledge of the profile of young internet addicts can help to detect the users at risk and thus contribute to the prevention of the additive use of the Internet.
