Construction is one of the sectors that consumes more energy and, therefore, is essential to adopt for more sustainable construction solutions that improve buildings energy efficiency. Green roofs emerge as a sustainable building solution, presenting several environmental, social and economic benefits. In order to contribute to the knowledge about these type of roofs, the research work presented in this dissertation intends to study the thermo-hygrometric behaviour of an extensive green roof. To achieve this goal, the experimental study of the thermal performance of an extensive green roof and a traditional roof with metal sheet coating installed in two test cells submitted to real climatic conditions was carried out. In situ measurements included the evaluation of indoor thermo-hygrometric conditions (temperature and relative humidity), heat fluxes, surface temperatures and also the determination of the thermal transmission coefficient. The existing portuguese thermal regulation, Housing Building Regulation (“Regulamento dos Edifícios de Habitação” - REH) was also applied in order to evaluate the influence of each type of roof on the thermal performance of the two test cells. Experimental results show the influence of the two types of roofs on the temperature and relative humidity inside the two test cells. A comparative analysis between the two solutions allows to conclude that, in the case of green roof, there is a higher stabilization of temperatures and relative humidity inside the test cell. It is also verified that heat fluxes present smaller oscillations in the case of the green roof and that the thermal transmission coefficient is also lower when the green roof is compared with the traditional one. Regarding the application of REH, it is concluded that the results obtained do not reflect the impact of the existence of a green roof verified during the experimental study, taking into account that the values obtained for the two types of roofs do not present significant differences when compared with the ones obtained experimentally.
