This Internship Report is part of the conclusion of the Master in Economic and Business Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. The curricular internship was carried out in a carpentry company, with activity related to the manufacture of other carpentry works for the civil construction and assembly of carpentry and joinery works. This fact, combined with the relevance of the civil construction sector, led to the choice of the theme of this work whose main objective is to study and understand the dynamics of the civil construction sector in Portugal between 1960 and 2018. After describing the host organization and the activities developed during the internship, a theoretical approach to the construction sector is carried out in the world and in Portugal. Then, the Portuguese construction sector is characterized through the recent evolution of relevant indicators and, later, the synchronization of the cyclical fluctuations of civil construction with the economic cycles in Portugal, in the period from 1960 to 2018, is analysed, using the application of the Baxter and King filter and the calculation of Spearman's correlation coefficients. The GVA (gross value added) of the construction sector presents a higher volatility than the national GVA, for the entire sample period, which makes the amplitude of fluctuations greater than the first in relation to the second. Regarding the analysis of correlations, leads and lags, the construction GVA is considered a contemporary variable, with no lags or advances in relation to the total GVA. It is hoped that this study can help the company where we develop the internship, “Carpintaria Machado”, to better understand the sector in which it operates and thus be able to better define its strategies.
