Mating disruption is an innovative method of biotechnical control against the European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) considered a key pest of the vineyard in the Douro Demarcated Region. This method is based on the disturbance of mating among individuals of the grape moth, through the diffusion of a pheromone synthetic similar to that produced by the female, confusing the males, and thus reducing the chance of locating the females and mating. Despite being an alternative to chemical pesticides, that should be promoted in sustainable viticulture, the repeated use of conventional dispensers, based on polyethylene, if not collected at the end of the season, has harmful consequences for the environment, since they are not biodegradable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the method of mating disruption against L. botrana using the biodegradable dispenser, ISONET – LTT BIO®, applied for the first time in the Douro Demarcated Region, compared to the ISONET – LTT® dispenser, both developed by Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. In general, the three flights of the moth started and peaked earlier (one to two weeks), relative to the DDR average data. The evolution of the amount of pheromone released by both dispensers under study lasted until the beginning of August, and the amount of pheromone in milligrams per day per hectare, allowed to identify differences in losses when they are applied to different levels. The lower level ISONET – LTT BIO® diffusers present the phenomenon of exhaustion earlier. The monitoring of the sexual traps allowed the detection of a higher incidence of the grape moth to the northwest of Quinta D. Matilde. A better performance of ISONET – LTT® was observed in the disorientation of the males, compared to the biodegradable dispenser. In general, the ISONET - LTT® dispenser was effective in reducing damage in the treated plots, with the exception of the third generation, in which there was a great heterogeneity of damage, more unfavorable in border plots, located in lower altitudes. In the ISONET – LTT BIO® area, damage was always lower, but we cannot conclude that this was exclusively related to the greater effectiveness of sexual confusion, since the same phenomenon was also observed in the untreated portion (control), the which may indicate earlier the pheromone entrainment of the remaining plots, to that area of the farm. Finally, it is concluded that applying the biodegradable dispenser ISONET – LTT BIO® from Shin-Etsu in the DDR for the first time, presented satisfactory results, and this dispenser may be the solution to reduce the production of waste in the environment.
