Resumo
A acupuntura evoluiu ao longo dos séculos, tanto na medicina oriental, como na ocidental, de modo a ter uma base científica e mais adequada terapêuticamente, havendo, consequentemente, uma notória progressão da sua utilização na medicina moderna. O termo acupuntura provém das seguintes palavras em latim, “pungare” que significa agulha, e “acus” que significa perfurar. De facto, por definição, a prática da acupuntura consiste na inserção de um tipo especial de agulhas, de fino diâmetro, em locais precisos no corpo, resultando numa resposta fisiológica específica, com a finalidade de controlar a dor aguda e dor crónica. O crescente interesse dos tutores com o bem-estar e saúde dos seus animais, tem tornado a reabilitação física uma prática cada vez mais comum na clínica de pequenos animais. A acupuntura tem sido uma terapia cada vez mais procurada e aceite em reabilitação, numa abordagem multimodal, devido à sua natureza minimamente invasiva, baixo nível de efeitos adversos, e pela experiência agradável por parte do animal e seu tutor. O presente documento foi realizado com base no trabalho desenvolvido durante o estágio curricular na Clínica Veterinária das Oliveiras, no Porto, com a duração de seis meses, com início em Setembro de 2019 e término em Fevereiro de 2020. Durante esse semestre, foram acompanhados vários casos que usufruíram desta terapia, dos quais 5 foram selecionados para uma abordagem mais extensiva, suportada por revisão bibliográfica. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a relevância da utilização da acupuntura na reabilitação física de animais de companhia. Pretende-se, também, fomentar a acreditação dos efeitos benéficos desta modalidade terapêutica.
Acupuncture has evolved over the centuries, both in eastern and western medicine, in order to have a scientific basis and to be more adequate therapeutically, which, consequently, lead to a notable progression of its use in modern medicine. The term acupuncture comes from the latin words, “pungare” which means needle, and “acus” which means pierce. In fact, by definition, the practice of acupuncture consists on inserting a special type of needles, with a small diameter, on precise places of the body, resulting in a specific physiological response, with the purpose of controlling acute and chronic pain. Tutors’ growing interest in the welfare and health of their animals, has made physical rehabilitation an increasingly common practice in the small animals clinic. Acupuncture has been an increasingly sought after and accepted therapy in rehabilitation, on a multimodal approach, due to its minimally invasive nature, low level of adverse effects, and the pleasant experience for the animal and for its tutor. This document was made based on the work developed during the curricular internship at Clínica Veterinária das Oliveiras, at Porto, with a duration of six months, starting in September 2019 and ending in February 2020. During this semester, several cases that benefited from this therapy were monitored, of which 5 were selected for a more extensive approach, supported by a literature review. Thus, this study aimed to determine the relevance of the use of acupuncture in the physical rehabilitation of pets. It is also intended to promote the accreditation of the beneficial effects of this therapeutic modality.
