The buildings sector is responsible for the consumption of about 40% of the total energy consumed in the European Union. However, this value can be reduced. The European Commission created the Directive 2002/91/EC about the Energy Performance of Buildings, which obliged the implementation of a energy system certification, in order to reduce the energy consumption. In this thesis the energy performance of a set of nine dwellings, in three existing buildings, in the district of Leiria were evaluated. Solutions to improve the energy efficiency of these dwellings were proposed. To obtain the data necessary for determining the energy performance of each dwelling the designs licensed in the City of Leiria were analyzed. None of the homes tested fulfill all requirements imposed by the Regulation of Thermal Behaviour Characteristics of Buildings. However, most of the dwellings have achived an energy performance corresponding to the class B. The dewlligs siuated on the first and the last floor have additional losses to the garage and to the attic, respectively. These flats have the greatest heat losses. The solutions proposed, in order to improve the performance of these dwellings were related to the external envelope, the systems, water heating (HD) systems and solar collectors. The implementation of the referred solutions showed that the use of solar collectors and more efficient HD systems are the ones with a greater impact on the energy consumption and the energetic class raised to upper classes.
