Communication and tourism: The tourist information offices of Douro Region (Portugal)
    2019 - Xerardo Pereiro
We problematize the relationship between tourism and communication in the tourism offices of the 19 municipalities of the Douro region (NUT III, UNESCO world heritage areain Portugal) and how theyare readjusting in order toadapt to new communication paradigms in tourism. This fact implies that the structures are (re)functionalized and (re)meaningin order to promote more social contact with tourists and to offerservices other than the simple information sharing. We shall analyse the “human factor” andtheir communication strategies with the visitors: verbal, non-verbal, textual, digital. The methodology used was participant-observation and mystery client techniques and interviews.

Gender, knowledge and motivation for wine purchasing
2018-11 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Guia, Ana Teresa Bernardo
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to verify if the gender effects described in the wine consumer behaviour literature, namely, concerning information search and the motivations to buy, may be explained by the mediating effect of subjective knowledge, taking into consideration that the importance of knowledge in the decision process is gender specific. Design/methodology/approach – A path analysis was modelled with an exogenous variable (gender), a mediating variable (subjective knowledge) and four dependent variables (need for information and three motivational dimensions). The model was assessed with empirical data obtained from a sample of 523 shoppers in large supermarkets in the areas of Lisbon and Oporto, Portugal. Structured interviews were conducted at checkout, collecting information on the relevant variables. Scales measuring the latent variables (knowledge, information and motivation) were previously validated through confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 217 wine consumers. Findings – Subjective knowledge fully mediates the effects of gender on motivation and information needs. Men think of themselves as more knowledgeable in wines and the mediation effect explains why, compared to women, they use less personal information sources and are more motivated to purchase wine. Practical implications – The authors suggest promotion programmes in large supermarkets focussing on opportunities for wine knowledge development. Originality/value – The study contributes to the literature by introducing and validating an alternative formulation of gender effects on wine shopping, emphasising the role of the purchaser’s perceived or subjective knowledge.

Knowledge, innovation, internationalization, and performance in a traditional industry
2016-03-22 - Marques, Carla Susana Da Encarnação; Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira
This paper seeks to promote a better understanding of the relationships between, and possible effects of, strategic knowledge management (SKM), innovation, internationalization, and performance in the Portuguese footwear industry. The rationale for this research is based on the understanding that innovation has played a major role in the recent good performance and internationalization of this industry—trends that have developed despite Portugal’s economic recession. The study used a quali-quantitative methodology, gathering data through semi-structured interviews with chief executive officers of footwear firms and academics specializing in innovation, as well as a questionnaire concentrating on the largest geographical cluster of Portugal’s footwear industry. We found support for our initial expectation that SKM is mainly absent from these firms’ formal practices: codification is seldom considered, and personalization tends to be informal. Nevertheless, SKM contributes to innovation, and more innovative firms are more extensively and deeply internationalized.

The Influence of Knowledge Sharing on Healthcare Organisations’ Performance
2016-07-06 - Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira; Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Marques, Carla Susana Da Encarnação; Cruz, Maria
Knowledge sharing (KS) lies at the core of knowledge management and reflects employees’ willingness to share valuable expertise. The benefits of KS have been documented in many settings, but its effectiveness varies considerably among organisations. This research sought, first, to identify healthcare workers’ perception of the importance of KS practices and the way they relate to organisational performance. Second, this study focused on verifying the (in)existence of the mediation effects of job satisfaction and turnover intention in the relationship between KS and organisational performance. Two dimensions of KS were considered: informal (IKS) and formal (FKS). To model their effects on performance, job satisfaction and turnover intention were considered mediators. Measurements of these four latent variables were collected from a sample of Portuguese healthcare professionals and validated via confirmatory factor analysis. Path structural equation modelling was used to assess the direct and indirect relationships between the four variables. The results suggest that, while FKS increases job satisfaction, it also increases the perceived performance of healthcare professionals regardless of their satisfaction levels. Keeping sample limitations in mind, our preliminary conclusion is that investing in FKS is beneficial to healthcare services, favouring the retention of satisfied workers who value non-financial organisational performance.

Knowledge sharing and healthcare: a bibliometric analysis
2017 - Cruz, Maria Lopes da; Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira; Marques, Carlos Peixeira
Taking into account the importance of Knowledge Management, both in academic terms and in the management practices, this work aims to explore and describe the scientific literature published in the ISI Web of Science. As specific objectives we present a) describe how thisfield of research is organized in terms of publications, authors and sources(journals); b) discuss how the literature referred to presents challenges (opportunities and difficulties) for the scholarship on the knowledge sharing within health organizations. A systematic approach was used, making use of a rigorous protocol and definition of steps to perform the research and analysis of the literature. The results show that this is still an incipient research topic due to the high polarization identified, either in terms of the number of publications by journals or authors. This paper identifies ways of research that can be explored in order to give greater consistency and to increase substantively the theoretical and empirical knowledge in this theme.

SME Innovative Capacity, Competitive Advantage and Performance in a ‘Traditional’ Industrial Region of Portugal
2009 - Marques, Carla Susana da Encarnação; Ferreira, João
This study aims to identify the factors that contribute to the building of a firm’s innovative capacity and to assess the way in which this contributes to our understanding of how much this contributes to improvements in the firm’s performance. A conceptual model is proposed consisting of five separate dimensions: the firm; the entrepreneur; the external business environment; the firm’s innovative capacity; and the firm’s performance. The study was based on questionnaire-based data from a sample of firms drawn from the manufacturing industry in the Beira Interior Region of Portugal. The results provided evidence regarding the factors influencing the innovative capacity of firms and permitted conclusions to be drawn regarding effects of superior innovative capacity on the construction of firms’ competitive advantage, which in turn contributes to improved performance.
