The influence of farmers’ community and networks on Amazonian aquaculture green transitions
2021-09 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Santos, Marcos César; Madureira, Livia Maria Costa
The intention to adopt a sustainable certification of Amazonian fish farming was studied in the Model of Goal-directed Behavior framework, confirming that this theory is relevant to explain the processes involved in the deliberative action to adopt sustainable fish farming practices. Furthermore, the model was extended to accommodate contextual regional factors associated to the community of Amazonian fish farmers and the various networks they may be involved in, particularly in the state of Rondonia. A structured questionnaire was designed to measure the 12 latent variables involved in the model. The answers were collected face-to-face from 264 farmers between July and December 2019. The model was assessed by PLSSEM, showing that predictors explain 64% of the variance of the intention to adopt the certification. Besides, blindfolding confirmed a strong degree of predictive relevance. The results suggest that access to extension services is an important factor to increase the feasibility of adoption, that is, to transform a desire into a readier state of will. Social norms from the farmers’ community also have an important role generating desire, in fact much more important than attitudes. This suggests that the regional ecosystem, reflected in the way farmers integrate community values and involve in networks, is an element to consider in studying the adoption of sustainable farming practices.

Astrotourism: the role of regional development networks and their contribution to the creation of a starlight tourism destination in the Tua Valley Natural Park
2020 - Tapada, Alberto; Marques, Carla Susana da Encarnação; Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Costa, Carlos; Teixeira, Sérgio J.; Campanella, Sancha
This study aims to draw a guiding thread and develop a participative proposal for a collaborative network that corresponds, simultaneously, to the needs of the region and the expectations of its actors, contributing to the local development and to the success of the Astrotourism Project and Starlight Certification of the Tua Valley Regional Natural Park. In this way, extrapolating the concept of network to the tourism area, a series of interviews were carried out with a set of regional stakeholders, in order to understand what their view of the networks is, whether they belong to an identical collaborative model and which are their contributions and expectations for the creation of a network with a view to the socioeconomic and cultural development of an inland region, such as the Tua Valley. The results show that the majority of the actors is aware with the concept of a network even because they already integrate similar models, supporting the creation of a cooperative structure of this kind, where a culture of sharing and mutual trust prevails, which is capable of responding to needs and specificities of its members and region.

Os efeitos das relações no trabalho no bem-estar afetivo, engagement e burnout dos terapeutas ocupacionais
2020 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Morais, Rita Amendoeira

The influence of pre-trip beliefs, impressions, and feelings on the intention to visit a destination
    2020 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira
This paper draws a structure of pre-trip destination image based on two dichotomies well acknowledged in the literature: on the one hand, the view that image is formed by perceptions (cognitive) and feelings (affective) (Baloglu & McCleary, 1999); on the other, the idea that it may be based on more concrete attributes or more abstract holistic impressions (Echtner & Ritchie, 1991). It is proposed that beliefs about attributes influence holistic impressions and both affect feelings. Then, in accordance to the Model of Goal-directed Behavior, it is hypothesized that image influences the antecedents of intentions, such as the overall attitude (Park et al., 2017) or the desire (Park & Petrick, 2009). A PLS-SEM was designed with measurements adapted from existent literature. The model was tested in a random telephone sample of 411 potential travelers living in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Oporto, Portugal. At the beginning of 2019, respondents were asked about their intentions to visit one rural inland destination during that year, and about the independent variables as well. Overall the results conform to the proposed model, the largest effects being the proximal relationships in the sequence attributes – holistic – feelings – attitude – desire – intention. Beliefs about attributes are very influencing, particularly on attitude; anticipated feelings of excitement affect attitude and desire; holistic impressions regarding charm and romance seem to be less important, but still have an effect, particularly on intention. It is suggested to pay attention to those attributes that have more potential to reinforce the holistic and affective components.

How gender (in)equalities are perceibed by female tourism workers in the Douro Region?
2018-11 - Makanse, Yousra; Oca Gonzalez, Luzia; Rodrigues, Ana Paula; Mendonça, Vera Lúcia Ferreira
The study intends to observe the female worker’s perspective about gender issues in order to draw some conclusions about gender inequalities. Furthermore, the research intended to perceive if tourism has the capacity to promote gender equality, or if the activity only reproduces the social norm, leaving women in the lower working positions or in occupations related to household duties and responsibilities. A qualitative research method was adopted and the research strategy was based in a case study. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation were used as the data collection techniques. The set of interviews was directed to women working in tourism positions in the Douro region. The interviews showed that the reproduction of gender stereotypes is still very noticeable in the Douro region. It is perceived that the image of women in the region is still connected to the household and childcare responsibilities and the existence of gender discrimination in the territory, in a direct or indirect way, was also presented in the interviewees’ discourses, mainly in the moral harassment form.

Tourism beliefs, conservation preferences, and support for tourism development in an emergent rural destination
2018-05-29 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira
In the last 25 years a vast literature on attitudes of host communities regarding tourism development has been produced, usually modelling support for further tourism development after residents’ beliefs about economic, social, and environmental benefits and costs of tourism. This paper aims contributing to the literature over two different grounds: on one hand, it includes expectations about affective outcomes of tourism, along with cognitive beliefs, to better explain overall attitude towards tourism; on the other hand, it assesses how conservation-related values do influence support for tourism. Based on literature gaps, a model was designed integrating two central features: (i) an overall evaluative attitude mediating the relationship between affective and cognitive belief composites and support for tourism; (ii) a measure of preferences regarding municipal conservation policies moderating the relationship between attitude and support. It was assessed from data collected in a quota sample of 349 residents in a municipality of North Portugal largely covered by a natural park with some natural and rural attractions. Quotas were defined proportionally according to the population distribution in typology of place (town versus villages) and in three demographic characteristics: sex, age, and education. Measures’ reliability and validity and paths between variables are estimated by SmartPLS software. Results show that both positive and negative affective changes are expected, but only the positive expectations contribute to explain overall attitude. As to cognitive beliefs, most residents see no significant impacts or they are moderately optimistic regarding economic and environmental effects of tourism. A noteworthy result is that the global evaluative attitude towards tourism is much more dependent on the positive affective outcomes from tourism than on the instrumental outcomes. The overall attitude has a positive effect on support, fully mediating the contribution of beliefs to explain support. On the other hand, leaning for conservation policies negatively affects support for tourism development. There is an additional positive interaction effect between attitude towards tourism and preferencefor conservation, meaning that people who strongly want the municipal government body to have conservation policies tend to be less supportive for tourism development, but more responsive to the effect of attitudes. On the opposite, people who want the municipal government to be less focussed on conservation, tend to be firm supporters of tourism, so their support is less dependent on the attitude. Both business and academic discourse tend to emphasise that rural destinations’ development benefits from the preservation of central features from rural physiography and culture in order to keep their attractiveness and competitiveness. However, this paper’s results suggest that, at least in this particular emergent rural destination, a conflict is apparent between residents’ conservation concerns and their support for tourism. We then interpret the overall favourable attitude and warm support as a manifestation of low concern with rural conservation and with potential negative impacts from tourism.

Beliefs, Behaviours, and Outcomes:   an Application to Knowledge Sharing in Healthcare Services
2017 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira; Marques, Carla Susana Da Encarnação; Ratten, Vanessa
Healthcare is a knowledge‐intensive activity entailing that knowledge management, particularly sharing and conversion, is critical to decision making throughout the diagnostic‐ therapeutic cycle and ultimately to management as well as to health outcomes. This paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of how knowledge sharing behaviours in healthcare services depend from attitudes and impact on perceived organizational performance. After analysis from a survey of 298 healthcare employees from North Portugal, results confirm an overall positive relationship between beliefs, behaviours, and performance. Additionally, it is suggested that a strong belief in the organizational benefits of knowledge sharing is more important to the frequency of sharing and to the perception of organizational performance than the belief in personal benefits from sharing is. Finally, results point out the importance of the relatively less frequent exchanges of explicit knowledge to improve healthcare outcomes.

Turnover intention in healthcare services: an application of the Affect Theory of Social Exchange
2018-06 - Marques, Carlos Peixeira; Leal, Carmem Teresa Pereira
The purpose of this paper is to test how, in the framework of the Affect Theory of Social Exchange, affective attachment to the organisation, resulting from knowledge exchange, acts as a barrier to employee attrition in Portuguese healthcare organisations. A model was designed to accommodate all the endogenous variables from the theory (exchange, affect, group cohesion, and affective attachment) and empirically tested using a survey of 409 employees. Findings support the theory?s adequacy to explain how affective attachment is developed and how it restrains employee leave, a process affecting and harming health systems and organizations in most OECD countries, Portugal included. Regarding knowledge exchange, findings suggest that personalisation promotes attachment, thus hindering turnover intentions. To the authors? knowledge, this is the first paper to fully integrate the endogenous variables that frame the Affect Theory of Social Exchange in studying either turnover intentions or knowledge exchange.
