As
A osmose inversa
As soluções
The exploitation of natural freshwater resources combined with an increased demand for water has led to a growing need for new and alternative sources of drinking water. Desalination provides a sound alternative, since it provides clean water which otherwise would not be accessible. Desalination is a process used to remove salts from seawater or brackish water. This process can be accomplished using different techniques. Industrial desalination technologies use thermal methods as well as semi permeable membranes to separate the solvent or some solutes. Reverse osmosis (RO) is by far the most widely used membrane desalination process worldwide. The main problem inherent in separation process using these types of membranes is fouling of the membrane walls, which results in a decrease in permeate flow. In this study we used CFD techniques to study the hydrodynamics of feed channels of a desalination membrane filled with spacers in zigzag arrangements and transverse in relation to the flow. Numerical solutions were obtained with FLUENT software for laminar flows in open channel (without spacers) and channels filled with spacers with different configuration. We tested four types of settings. The results show the effect of distance between the filaments in the distribution of velocities in the stream function contours, the friction factor, in pressure drop and shear stress developed in the membrane walls for different Reynolds numbers studied (10 Re 300 ). The decrease in distance between filaments may lead to more active recirculation patterns that may promote mass transfer on the membrane surfaces despite the decrease in their usable area.
