A informação obtida neste trabalho permitiu identificar as soluções bioclimáticas existentes nestes edifícios.
Nowadays, environmental issues are of great concern, so it is important to adopt more sustainable and efficient solutions in the construction of new buildings and in the rehabilitation of traditional buildings. Among these solutions, stands out the use of bioclimatic techniques, such as the adaptation of buildings to the local climate and environment and the use of local materials. The proper integration of these solutions leads to the improvement of buildings thermal performance and therefore, to the reduction of energy consumption and to the increase of sustainability in construction. The traditional buildings in northern Portugal are built with local materials such as schist, granite, wood and earth. The study of this type of buildings is extremely important for the knowledge of the used bioclimatic solutions and of the way they influence their thermal behavior. This work aims to contribute to the knowledge of these techniques, through the thermal characterization of the construction solutions adopted in the traditional schist and granite buildings built in several municipalities of northern Portugal. The information obtained in this research work enabled the identification of the bioclimatic solutions adopted in these buildings, such as the high thermal inertia and thickness of the exterior walls, the main glazed areas facing south, the reduced surface of glazed areas, the use of shutters and natural shading elements, such as deciduous vegetation. This work also leads to the conclusion that the bioclimatic techniques used in the schist and granite buildings are similar, although there are some differences due to the local climate, as follows, the orientation of facades and windows, the glazed surface and the use of shading devices. The thermal transmission coefficient (U) of the identified solutions in exterior walls was also determined, using analytical and experimental methods. The values of U obtained analytically were higher than those obtained experimentally. This was due to the fact that the analytical method did not take into accounted the influence of the earth/clay for laying the stones. This research work enable the knowledge of the construction solutions adopted in these traditional buildings, as well as their thermal characteristics, which may help in rehabilitation processes and also encouraging the use of bioclimatic solutions in new buildings.
