The characterisation (anatomic, physical and mechanical characterisation) of nine woods, three of which usually used in chordophones production, and five Portuguese woods and also an invasive species which actually occupies a large area in the national territory, the main objective is to determine whether the Portuguese and the invasive species’ wood has the potential to take the place of the most used woods in the construction of chordophones, considering that the currently most used wood species are endangered. The focus of this study were three parts of the instrument (back plate, sides and fretboard). The anatomical study includes the microscopic observation, fiber length and biometry. As for the physical properties it was determined densities, moisture content and shinkge. For the mechanical properties it was determined the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE). After the species’ characterisation, the national and invasive species were compared to the most used in today’s construction of chordophones so that it could be determined those which are similar to each other and, using some references, could be established the relationship between the anatomic, physical and mechanical characteristics and the acoustic properties of the wood and sound quality. In summary, we can say that there is some species that present some of the desired characteristics, that is, very similar to those of the currently used in the production of chordophones, and there is also some species that present good acoustic and good sound propagation properties (when compared to references).
