The assessment of natural radioactivity in the region of Amarante was based upon the study of soils, water and houses, in order to correlate the gamma and radon radiation values obtained with the factors that were probably conditioning them. To understand the behavior of this gas, a detailed mapping, scale 1:15000, of the region was initially completed in order to identify the main lithologies of the region, and an analysis of fractures was also carried out to identify the frequency and extent of the alignments. Mostly granitic rocks emerge in the region of A marante, with U (6,4 to 18,2 ppm) and Th (18,3 to 32,2 ppm – Table I) above average values for the upper continental crust (about 3 ppm for U and 11 ppm for Th), indicative of a high potential for the production of radon. Sound and altered samples were collected from granitic lithologies of the region for petrography and geochemistry studies, with the aim of identifying the U-bearing minerals (monazite and uraninite) and Th (thorianite and thorite), showing that lithology is extremely important as a geological factor influencing the concentration of radon in this region. The average flow of gamma radiation, measured in contact with the rocks, was 279 ηGy/h in the granite of Amarante and ca. 155 ηGy/h in Paleozoic metasediments (Table VI). A number of, moderate intensity, radiometric anomalies were observed in granite fractures of Amarante, registering a maximum of 420 ηGy/h, corresponding to a U content of 26 ppm (Table VII). Based on the information obtained from the radiometric background, the concentrations of radon, total alpha and total beta were determined in the waters of 15 sampling locations and radon in 73 houses in the region of Amarante. Regarding the radon concentrations in the waters of the region, the average values do not reach the maximum admissible value of 1000 Bq/l, although six sampling sites revealed values above admissible and there was even a maximum value of 2294 Bq/l. The values of total alpha activity are, in three samples of spring water, above the maximum acceptable value of 0,5 Bq/l according to national legislation and twelve samples of spring water are above the amount allowed by the EU of 0,1 Bq/l. The values of total beta are always below the maximum permissible limit. The analysis of radon in houses was performed using passive detectors of the CR-39 type in winter conditions, revealing that the highest radon concentrations occur close to the major regional faults; noting that four values, above 2000 Bq/m3, were registered (the value recommended by the EU is 400 Bq/m3 for older houses and 200 Bq/m3 for more recent ones). The geometric average for the concentration of radon in the winter period is 324 Bq/m3 (Tabela XI) and by removing 37% of this value for the summer registration, there is an annual geometric average of 264 Bq/m3. Furthermore, 35 out of the 73 homes exceeded the recommended limit in the winter, with a maximum of 2845 Bq/m3. In 48% of the houses that exceeded the recommended amount, 37% of them are positioned upon the X-granitic lithology sampled as AT2. The homes built upon metasediments reported lower geometric averages, namely 85,1 Bq/m3. Hence, the main geological factor which determines the concentration of radon in homes is of lithological nature, as a result of the typical uranium levels of this granite lithology, which also contributes to the high levels of radon in water and consequent increase within the houses. The regional fracturing also proved crucial for the high results of radon in soil, water and buildings. Finally, the information obtained was combined and a radon risk exposure map was created for the population of Amarante, noting the granite region, surrounding the city, as a moderate to high risk, whilst the metasedimentary zone north of Aboim registers a low to moderate risk.
