Fungi are organisms that live with humans every day. They can be found almost anywhere in the environment, even in the air, where the fungal structures have the capacity to develop new vegetative and reproductive structures when they reach the appropriate substrate. They can also be found in soil, water, plants, animals and humans. It is important to understand that the severity of the infection depends on the type of fungus involved but mainly the immune status of the individual. This study consisted in the detection of filamentous fungi in the fur of animals, wild and domestic and, in the nasal mucosa of humans. Totally, 228 samples were collected: 101 belonged to wild animals, 73 nasal samples of humans and 54 samples of domestic animals. The collected samples were seeded into specific culture media. Fungal identification was made based on phenotypic characteristics of the colonies at the macroscopic and microscopic level. The most prevalent genus in the wild animals were Mucor, Penicillium and Aspergillus. There was also found a high percentage of isolation of dermatophyte fungi in egyptian mongoose (26,3%) and in red foxes (5,9%). In the nasal samples the most prevalent genus were Penicillium, Mucor, Cladosporium and Aspergillus. The same fungi, but in different order of prevalence, were isolated from domestic animals: Cladosporium, Penicillium, Mucor and Aspergillus. It’s also important to note that five dermatophyte fungi were isolated, all of them belonging to the genus Microsporum, in domestic animals. Four of the five animals were male and none of them had skin lesions. The results obtained suggest the importance of conducting surveys, since they allow not only to let us know the mycobiota present in the fur of animals but also minimize the risk of infection. Talaromyces marneffei was identified by microbiological techniques in 7 out of 228 samples subjected to this study: in three wild animals, three nasal samples from human and in a domestic animal. Subsequently all of these isolates were confirmed by PCR. The results obtained by molecular biology suggest that this technique may be applied for the confirmation of early diagnosis of the infection caused by this fungus, since it is possible to obtain results in a short period of time.
