The aim of the current study is to characterize, from their perspectives, the first and second grade Guinean teachers’ reading teaching practices and methods. In order to do so, 182 teachers were inquired with a questionnaire and three semi-structured interviews were made to three teachers. The quantitative and qualitative analysis made possible to verify that almost the totality of the teachers had no knowledge of the reading teaching methods and that their practises of teaching reading are distant from the ones that are scientifically evidenced-based and considered to be essential for the development of reading autonomy and for literacy promotion. Furthermore, the teachers showed unawareness about the assessment and interventions aimed at the students who reveal some comprehension, oral production and reading limitations. It can also be understood that the teachers have no pedagogical planning pratices regarding the competence and goals that the students must achieve. They teach and handle their activities supported only by the guidebooks, without organizing their material by contents or themes regarding the use of the teaching time. In all the analyses, the relations between the teachers’ academic qualifications and their teaching methods and activities did not reach significant association, what indicates that the specific pedagogical training of some of the teachers did not cause differences among teachers regarding the examined dimensions. This study can contribute to inform the improvement of the teachers training regarding reading teaching and by that way to contribute to the reduction of the Guinean children school failure and abandonment, regardless of their social status.
