The PhD Thesis "Social Education in Portugal - from the conceptual field to the construction of professionalism" is the result of the research by Joana Salgado Baía, under the guidance of Professor Marcelino de Sousa Lopes (professor at the University of Trás-osMontes and Alto Douro) and Professor Sofia Marisa Alves Bergano (professor at the School of Education - Polytechnic Institute of Bragança). This theme arose from the fact that we are Superior Technicians of Social Education, and because we have been on the ground for some years, we continue to feel a great lack of knowledge, both on the part of ordinary citizens and also by some employers. This was one of the reasons that motivated us to carry out this research work in the hope that it will clarify this lack of definition and lack of knowledge about Social Education in Portugal. The purpose of this study was to clarify what is known and what is known about Social Education in Portugal, so that it is comprehensible to the general population (community, employers and other colleagues in the social area). the role and the roles and profile of the Higher Social Education Technician in the context of work, what was the origin of this scientific area, to present the Code of Ethics by which these professionals are governed, their scope of intervention and with which population of the social sciences (Social Education, Sociocultural Animation, Social Pedagogy and Social Assistance), that is, we want with the elaboration of this work to contribute to the reflective development of the professionalism of the Higher Social Education Technician. Our research was essentially based on the consultation of bibliographic records and the data and information collected through a structured interview with ten specialists in the area of Social Education. After having interpreted all the information gathered, we are in a position to affirm that Social Education, due to the social problems that currently exist in our society, is a profession in free development, adaptation and growth, since this scientific area more than to work in contexts of social exclusion, marginalization and limitation situations always have an associated educational and pedagogical role, in order to work with the subject (whatever the problem presented), their full autonomy and consequent insertion in society. We are confident that the Social Education will soon have in Portuguese society its due recognition and status.
