Natural gas is considered a clean fuel that could replace the current fuels, allowing economic and environmental benefits. As this type of energy is not produced in Portugal it exports all the consumption of natural gas, being much of it used in the production of electric energy, industry and domestic consumption. The transport sector is in the near future consumer of this type of energy on a large scale, promoting a lower emission of greenhouse gases. Biogas, which is produced by the biological decomposition of organic matter, could be a long-term substitute for natural gas. The Iberian market for natural gas assumes a relevant role in the final price of energy and applied tariffs, and MIBGAS is the regulator of this market. In order to understand the logistics of natural gas at the Iberian level, throughout this work will be described the main operators of this market. This work will also analyze the consumption of natural gas, its price and tariffs over time, and in the main sectors of consumption. In order to analyze the evolution of prices and tariffs on natural gas, the inequality between Portugal and Spain will also be analyzed, in particular with regard to access tariffs between the two countries. In addition to the evolution of natural gas consumption, used in the domestic and industrial sectors, this work will analyze the use of this energy source as a vehicular fuel, verifying its current use in the area of mobility in Portugal and Spain. Since natural gas is a fully imported energy source, it is important to perceive and study its substitution through another renewable source, as is the case of biogas, which can be seen in this work as an alternative to the use of gas in different sectors.
