Resumo
Nesta dissertação de mestrado discute-se o papel cívico, social e cultural da mulher no século XVIII em Portugal. A partir da abordagem de obras e artigos (tanto da época, como mais recentes), presta-se atenção específica a obras de António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches e de Luís António Verney, e será feito um estudo da situação da mulher no século XVIII e como isso se refletia no seu papel cívico, social e cultural. Com isto, poder-se-á compreender como o Iluminismo influenciou esta situação, e como tal facto se reflete nas obras de mulheres deste século, com destaque para o estudo de três escritoras portuguesas (Gertrudes Margarida de Jesus, Paula da Graça e Marquesa de Alorna), procurando-se colocar os seus pontos de vista em comparação com os da escritora inglesa Mary Wollstonecraft. O principal objetivo desta dissertação será demonstrar como as ideias iluministas transformaram o enquadramento da mulher na Europa do século XVIII e como isto influenciou o seu papel cívico, social e cultural, particularmente em Portugal.
This masters dissertation will discuss the civic, social and cultural role of the woman in the 18th century in Portugal. By approaching works and articles, both from that age and more recent ones, it will pay close attention to the titles of António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches and Luís António Verney, studying the woman’s status on the 18th century and its reflection on her civic, social and cultural role. From this study, it will be possible to understand how the Enlightenment influenced the woman’s position and how it’s reflected on the works of women from the 18th century, highlighting three portuguese female writers (Gertrudes Margarida de Jesus, Paula da Graça and Marquesa de Alorna) and comparing their points of view with those of english female writer Mary Wollstonecraft. The main goal of this thesis is to demonstrate how enlightenment ideas transformed the woman’s status in Europe in the 18th century and how this in itself influenced the woman’s civic, social and cultural role, specifically in Portugal.
