Demographic and economic crisis in Europe and consequently in Portugal, requires National Health Service to do its task with less medical staff, for a greater number of patients in continuous health care. The technology that exists today allows to provide more and better services, including localization and real-time monitoring of hospitalized patients, thus offering to patients and assistants a better quality of life. This thesis describes the development of an intelligent system for indoor location and monitoring of hospitalized patients. The presented solution contains a software that provides an interface to the medical staff, and a wireless system that allows the localization of a patient. Medical staff can know in real time information about the location, and check the physical condition of patients, through sensors. They also can also control the movements of patients in wheelchairs. The mobile system collects data and sends it through a wireless network, the software has the task to launch warnings.
