The higher education institutions (HEI) have faced a constant competitiveness, so seek related marketing tools to enable the achievement of goals. Therefore, have sought to adapt to market dynamics and stand out as good options for customers. A good option is related to the quality of education that adds value to the institutions, and attracts more students when there is internal customer satisfaction (employees) and external. The concept of market orientation [MO] emerges as a tool for the effective pursuit of customer satisfaction and possible solutions to the problems of abidance of students in universities until the completion of the course, one of the great contemporary challenges. In that context, we sought to evaluate the ability responses against of market orientation of public institutions of Brazilian and Portuguese higher education and if they are different from private HEI. This study sought to evaluate, through research and theories developed in relation to market orientation , models , tools and strategies for achieving customer satisfaction . In this case, one of the guidelines was that the higher education institutions may maintain an active communication channel with the needs of companies to meet the market where trainees will be directed by encouraging them to set up a goal, before the courses chosen. The results of the statistical analyzes that public HEI have an average market orientation, superior to private HEI. However, these higher education institutions should invest more in MO, since statistically the difference between them were not so significant.
